If you're over 45 and feel like your body doesn't respond to training the way it used to, you're not alone. That doesn’t mean you can’t reach your goals. It means you need to train differently and smarter.
Here's are a few tips for 45+ athletes:
🏊♀️1. Recovery is a strength not a weakness. Surprise, you need MORE recovery than you did at 30. That doesn't mean taking it easy in training. It means being strategic: your training has to have the right work to rest ratios, and you must be disciplined about sleep .
🏋️♀️2. Strength training is non-negotiable I’ve been there before. How do I squeeze one more thing into my schedule? After 40, you lose muscle mass faster. 2-3 strength sessions per week aren't "nice to have" - they're must haves for injury prevention.
🏃♂️🚴♀️3. Your long runs/rides are too long! Hear me: You are very likely riding and running too much and at the wrong intensities. With consistent, targeted efforts you can limit those gruesome mega-volume weekends and put the fun back in your training. Your body adapts differently now - stop crushing yourself into the ground!
☑️4. Fuel matters more than ever. Are you having a hard time finding palatable foods and under fueling? We get it. Sure protein consumption is all the rage and you’re probably sick of hearing it, but there is some truth in the hype. Your needs increase with age and protein consumption has to be prioritized as part of a balanced approach. Your recovery depends on it.
💯5. Use your advantages. Famed running coach Jeff Cunningham has a saying, consistently good beats occasionally great. If you’re chasing endurance sports dreams at this stage of life, you have strengths to build on. You've built a career, raised a family, and pushed through life’s challenges. Use that experience and discipline to tackle your training and goals!
With commitment, consistency and a few tweaks; breakthrough performances are right around the corner. You can PR, qualify for Kona, and crush your goals.
